Fall 2009:
- Introduction to Recreation and Outdoor Studies
In this course, students learn about the history of recreation, prominent figures in the field who made significant progress towards developing the discipline into an industry.
Spring 2010:
ranged from learning how to cook meals to building an igloo, and from basic map and compass skills
to learning leave no trace principles (LNT).
- Outdoor Living Skills

Fall 2010:
- Outdoor Program Design & Management
- Foundations of Adventure Recreation
- Outdoor Leadership Practicum
- Adventure Group Processing & Facilitation
- Site Management & Skills Application
All of these classes combined account for what the college calls the sophomore block. The reason all of these classes are grouped together is because students actually spend most of the semester off campus rafting, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking. These classes are combined into one larger experience where students learn through experience how to become a safe and effective leader
Spring 2011:
and ice. As part of this class, students got the opportunity to ice climb in the Adirondacks.
- Essentials of Winter Mountain Travel

- Camp Counseling and Youth Leadership
For this course, students were taught the basic skills of how to work with children of different ages. Later in the course, students are taken to an actual camp where they can practice their skills in real situations.
Fall 2011:
- Program Planning & Leadership
During this course, students learn about creating lesson plans and teaching and leading activities to children. Live work with children at a local high school was integrated into the coursework.
Spring 2012:
- Sociological and Psychological Dimensions of Leisure
- Human Dimensions of Leadership
- Field Leadership Seminar
- Management of Outdoor & Adventure Programs
- Camp and Youth Program Management
As a summary for all of these classes, students learned to deal with sensitive issues that arise in groups during trips. Students also plan an entire four-day expedition, and learn many of the managerial skills necessary to run a adventure business or camp.
Fall 2012:
- Master Planning
This course teaches the laws governing recreation facilities. Students learn about safety requirements for pools, fitness centers, and many other structures. Additionally, the course teaches the many different considerations to make before deciding to build a recreation facility.
Spring 2013:
- Recreation & Outdoor Studies Seminar
In this course, students are given the opportunity to explore various issues relative to the career. Students complete a project such as making a guide book of local recreation opportuities, and give a colloquium presentation for the public.
